Neuralyst Technical Note: 14-1

Release Date: 10-November-1994

Affected Versions: Version 1.4 or earlier

Symptoms: (1) The message “Inconsistent input column count in Genetic Supervisor data.” occurs after using Run Genetic Trainer and an attempt to retrieve the optimized network is made. The neural network input column count is in excess of 40-50 columns. (2) The Edit Column Lists command does not display all the column names selected with the various Add ... Columns commands when large numbers of columns are used.

Problem: In Neuralyst V1.4 or earlier, string processing routines that parse column lists are limited to 127 characters, which typically corresponds to 40-50 column names. Columns lists longer than this limit are not correctly counted. Solution: Neuralyst V1.40a, or greater, improves the string processing to handle a maximum of 255 characters, which corresponds to 85-95 column names. Column lists that are greater than this still cannot be handled at this time. This limits the columns managed by the commands Run Genetic Trainer for the Input column list only and Edit Columns Lists for each independent column list. This does not limit the selection of columns with the commands Add Input Columns, Add Target Columns, or Add Output Columns, which can deal with the full 255 columns accessible in Excel.
